Janus is the god of transitions and time; beginnings and endings; thence also the guardian of gates and doorways. But he is usually depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions, the past and the future.

Janus was frequently used to symbolize change and transitions such as the progression of past to future, of one condition to another, of one vision to another, and of one universe to another - that of presiding over all beginnings and transitions, whether abstract or concrete, sacred or profane. Janus frequently symbolized young people's growth to adulthood. Having jurisdiction over beginnings Janus had an intrinsic association with omens and auspices.

The Romans dedicated the month of January to Janus. His most apparent remnant in modern culture is his namesake, the month of January.

The Silver Jubilee Conference of Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of India is being held in January and hence ruled by Janus. A very interesting highlight of the conference program are the Janus sessions. They will look back to the evolution and forward to the progression of knowledge on a focused topic in niche areas of paediatric orthopaedics.
