Genetics and Basic Research

Faculty

Aims

This ICL will focus on exciting discoveries in the area of stem cell therapy, skeletal dysplasia, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, and clubfoot. Four distinguished speakers with their expertise in these areas will provide clinically relevant presentations followed by a panel discussion on the impact of basic research on clinical practice. This ICL will cater to pediatric orthopaedic surgeons.

Objectives

  • To highlight the regenerative and immunomodulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells and their clinical applications in the treatment of various orthopaedic conditions, such as osteonecrosis, cartilage, and physeal damage.
  • To provide an overview of molecular diagnosis of skeletal dysplasia using next-generation sequencing, and to present strategy and experience of discovering the causative gene for specific skeletal dysplasia.
  • To discuss the latest discoveries on the pathophysiology of Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and potential biological therapies that are on the horizon.
  • To present the genetics and its association with the epidemiology of clubfoot. The role of environmental factors, especially heavy metals, and genetic biomarkers will be discussed.
