CMC is currently the only academic institution to have a designated Paediatric Orthopaedic Unit offering a Post Doctoral Fellowship Course in Paediatric Orthopaedics. The unit caters to about 14000 out patients, 1100 inpatients, 1350 surgeries and 500 day care surgeries a year. The conditions managed by the unit are varied and include trauma, limb deficiencies, cerebral palsy, congenital abnormalities, dysplasias, tumours and neuromuscular diseases. Specialized multi-specialty clinics are held weekly for children with cerebral palsy, tumours, clubfoot and skeletal dysplasia. The fellowship is of 2 year duration and is awarded by Tamilnadu MGR university.

The surgical skills in addition to basic paediatric surgical training, includes use of fine power instruments, latest in implants, custom made tumor prosthesis and operating microscope. Facility for research is immense and this includes animal lab and stem cell research facility. There are a number of ongoing internal and external (national and international) funded research projects. The 2 fellows selected each year are encouraged to do research and a dissertation is mandatory for the course.

The applications open in February and there is a 2 step exam. Step 1 of entrance exam is written and is held usually in May in many centers and a step 2 exam clinical/interview in June. Course starts 15th July and there is an exit exam held by the university at the end of 2 years.
