For any surgeon dealing with limb deformity in children, a different level of complexity is met when there are elements of angulation, translation and rotation together. This can be challenging when all components are resolved to a single level in the bone or to different levels within the same bone or the same limb. This ICL will cater to those who wish to expand their knowledge in this area and provide an opportunity to question an experienced faculty on this subject.
Many surgeons will resort to using software-assisted devices in such complex deformities but, in this ICL, we choose to show the attendees that whilst hexapods and software-assistance remain relevant – and provide tips on their use in some conditions - there are alternative approaches and some of these have added attractions over the classic paradigms. Furthermore, we have expert advice for gradual correction complex or resistant foot deformities by external fixation which, despite the ubiquity and success of the Ponseti method, is still much needed today.
Aims of the ICL
- To learn new tips in dealing with multiplanar deformities
- To revisit treatment strategies for Blount’s disease and multiplanar foot deformities
- To weigh the elements of external fixator choice for use in multiplanar deformity correction
Target audience
Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeons treating limb deformity familiar with principles of deformity analysis and correction.
