Description

A balance of didactic lecture and case discussions surrounding the detection and early management of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) designed to be of particular interest and value to the pediatric orthopaedic surgeon. This session may also be of interest and utility to the general orthopaedist that may see DDH patients in their practice, or are interested in learning more about some of the controversies, challenges and management practices involved in detecting and treating DDH in infancy. This ICL will present an overview of the current screening and management approaches for DDH, including discussion on some of the confusion related to classification and terminology used in the DDH literature. Different screening practices implemented in different health resource settings will be discussed, as will the specific role of ultrasound for both screening and management purposes of DDH in the young infant. Once detected, a series of case discussions will be used to demonstrate the role for both conservative brace management, and operative management by closed or open reduction, as well as when these different approaches may be indicated.

Active discussion amongst panel members and attendees will be encouraged with a number of specific case examples to illustrate the different management options and outcomes. This ICL will provide the opportunity for pediatric orthopaedists to consider their own screening and management practices for DDH, and demonstrate some of the important issues surrounding practice variability in early DDH management.

Learning Objectives
  • The registrant will gain insight into the current confusion and lack of clarity in DDH terminology prevalent in the literature, and will be presented with a novel, standardized classification system.
  • The registrant will learn about the scope of screening practices for DDH detection in different health resource settings, and will come to understand the role ultrasound can play in early detection.
  • The registrant will engage in case discussion to understand the benefits and risks of conservative and operative management of early DDH, as well as indications for choosing a specific treatment approach.
